IN-EX: What do you think of the Pinao building in Noumea in relation to the line of reasoning you have just described?
Jacques Ferrier:I see Piano as a Renaissance architect.He is an extraordinary architect, but he continues to turn out unique pieces. That means technology plays a major role for Piano, but in a scenario developed by an architect-demiurge. Although he is open to local building culture, his openness is fairly limited,almost one-dimensional,anecdotal. He designed some bamboo structures, but the part at the end of each piece fo bamboo is so complex that the structure takes on a highly prestigous quality. The fact is, there are some extremely simple bamboo structures that can be found right across the globe...<br>iano's strength resides in the fact that he is incredibly skilled at joining pieces together and can use whatever comes to hand... That's where his brick building in lyons fails... the meaning of the materials is lost...
